Kelpie (Monster Horses)
My interest in horses and the supernatural was the inspiration for my project, “Monster Horses.” This project also had the overarching theme of facing your fears and overcoming them, as at the time I had been in the process of conquering my own fears. I developed this project for my undergraduate thesis that focused on 3D sculpting and printing, while incorporating traditional art techniques into the final product. It was also my intention to reproduced and sell the models to model horse collectors to be repainted by fellow artists.
Kelpie was the first monster horse that I sculpted and is based on the mythical British Isles shape shifting water horse, but with a twist. I based her design on an experience I had as teen, where I swam in jellyfish infest waters while on vacation to Virginia Beach. At the time of creation this decision on my Kelpie’s design allowed the model to standout compared to similar fantasy models in the model horse hobby.
